Moving houses

Groundbreaking 1991

Groundbreaking 1991

The new church remained the same from 1970 until 1990 when three neighboring houses were purchased.  Two of the houses were moved from their foundations to new locations.  The third house (now named the White House) remained to become a place for the youth group and others to meet and a new parking lot was built.

At the same time, the inside of the church was undergoing changes as well.  Renovation of the nursery, expansion of the fellowship hall, new offices and an elevator were dedicated on March 1, 1992.

The Sanctuary was last remodeled and made handicapped accessible in 1997.  The dedication of the Sanctuary was held May 31, 1998.

The Art Work of Jerry Boeve

Created in 1992, the outdoor Advent banners symbolize, from the top, the light of the world pouring into the world bringing celebration, joy, hope, and peace through divine grace.  The white and gold colors help to reflect this powerful light of incarnation.  (God in flesh appearing.)  The wings flowing upward from the bottom represent our joyful and grateful response to the divine grace, as well as an active waiting in expectation.  The purples and blues symbolize both the longing and the preparation for the light.  The white filters through the purples and blues as we ourselves receive and become in response, the light to the world.
The work of art that hangs in the Fellowship Hall was commissioned by Marty Jones and the Worship and Arts Task Force in 1992.

The three banners represent both the firm grounding and the fluidity of our faith.  The colors and forms represent the elements of creation; wind, fire, and water.  The flames represent the pain and sorrow of our lives.  The doves, are the response and wisdom of the heart, flying freely through the pain toward the fullness of life and fulfillment in God.

Textile Wall Art

As you enter the doors by the Nursery your attention is immediately drawn to the left and the textile wall art panels depicting the church year.  These lovely panels were made by Jeanette Paulson of "Adorn This House" in Duluth, Minnesota.  Throughout each panel runs swathes of gold which encase each image and can be seen as the arms of God.

Ordinary Time in the church year runs from the Sunday after Pentecost  to the beginning of Advent. The color Green symbolizes growth and life as seen daily in creation as well as the growth of the church and the individual Christian.  Jesus used images of grapes and the vine, wheat and bread often in his parables.  These are also the ingredients of Holy Communion and are shown as grapevines and full heads of wheat on this panel.

Advent is a time of anticipation and hope as we long for the retelling of the birth of Christ and for His second coming.  It is also a time of hope as we long for the coming of the Light of the World into the darkness of our lives.  The design of the Advent piece highlights the coming of light into the world.  The circles can be seen as a global image or life in the womb awaiting birth.  Blue is the color of hope.
Christmas is one of the major festivals of the church year.  The color becomes white in our worship as we celebrate the coming of Christ as the Light of the World.  The star of Bethlehem illuminates the manger in this design.  God's transcendent love has become visible in the birth of a child. The color purple used in Lent represents not only the royalty of Christ, but also penitence and mourning.  The cross hung with the crown of thorns is the traditional symbol of Jesus' humiliation and suffering.  On this we meditate for the 40 days of Lent.
The colors of white and gold are used for the Easter season because they represent purity and joy.  Easter if the highpoint of the Christian year because of the significance of Christ's resurrection.  This textile work uses the symbolism of the light of Christ bursting from the empty tomb with the empty cross superimposed.  Even death could not extinguish the light of God brought into the world through Christ. The day of Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Disciples and what we have come to call the birthday of the Church as the Disciples took their preaching, teaching and healing to all people.  The color for Pentecost is red and the dove is a traditional symbol for the Holy Spirit.  The diversity of all people and the church is symbolized using a variety of colors and textures of fabric.
