Organs and Organists
In 1926, two daughters of
the Reverend Levi Longfellow gave a pipe organ to the church to honor
their father. Martha Norris, who had started playing on a pump organ
when she was only 12 years old, was the first organist for the new pipe
organ. The pipe organ was a theatre organ.
When the new church was
built in 1970, the organ was moved to the new church and was used for
seven more years. Plans were soon made and a new pipe organ was
dedicated October 8, 1978. The new organ was a Moeller with 19
ranks, 17 stops, and 1,173 pipes at a cost of $70,000. The chimes
from the first organ were incorporated into the new organ and the organ
console was mounted on a movable platform so that it could be moved to the
front of the Sanctuary for concerts.
