The
Reverend Dan Johnson was the guest preacher July 18, 2004 as part of
Brooklyn’s 150th anniversary celebration. Dan was ordained in 1986 and
served in the Northwest District before coming to Brooklyn in 1988.
He was Vice Chair of the New Church Development Section of the
Minnesota Conference Board of Global Ministries and was aware of the
potential new member population for Brooklyn Church. UM Men began meeting
monthly and a promotional video was created and used for new member
orientation. Dan said, “I jumped on the back of programs already in
motion at Brooklyn and kept my ears and eyes open to God’s calling in
new directions.” Responsibility for evangelism and accepting fellowship
continued to grow each year. In the midst of the growth, he continued to
ask “Are we making disciples of all these people?” The worship
attendance answer said “yes”. Dan served as pastoral care and advocacy
for the African immigrant community and was a district Baby Boomer
workshop leader. He believed churches are the healthiest when they reach
out to others and Brooklyn members were challenged to participate in the
Paint-a-thon, to invite and welcome the stranger, and use our talents in
exceptional ways.
Dan continued his education by attending a Herb Miller Church Growth
Workshop, a Phoenix Evangelism Conference and Spiritual Formation in
Covenant Groups. He was a member of the Bishop’s task force on Alternate
Futures and served as a workshop leader for Search Institute.
Dan left Brooklyn after 3 ½ years to start Cross Winds, a new church
in Maple Grove. He left believing Brooklyn’s potential for touching
lives with Christ’s love was limitless.
