Banias, located at the foot of Mt. Herman in the Golan Heights was once named Caesarea Phillipi by Philip the Tetrarch in 2 BCE.  It was here that Jesus asked, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" (Matthew 16:13-20).

The headwaters of the Jordan River are found in Banias.  5 grottos in the hillside are the remains of a shrine to the god Pan, and there is also the remains of a temple built by Herod.
