The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth at 1,378 feet below sea level.  The Jordan River is the main tributary that feeds the Dead Sea.  There is no outlet for the fresh water, so it evaporates in the desert climate.  The Dead Sea is 9 times as salty as the ocean and due to this salinity causes you to become buoyant.

If you look at the pictures, the water is not very deep, but if you "sit down" your legs rise up and you automatically float.  One of the young men on the trip while floating on his stomach, arms and legs out of the water was heard to say, "So this is what it feels like to be Superman."
