Masada is located on top of a mesa on the edge of the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea Valley.  It is isolated on all sides by deep gorges.  It is known as Herod's royal citadel and also as the last outpost of Jewish zealots during the Jewish revolt.  There are two ways to get to the top of the mountain, either by walking the "Snake Path" or by a 10 minute cable car ride.
